Rant Rebuttal
Well this is a first, I had such a strong rebuttal posting on my music rant that I thought it deserved a post of it's own... Take it away Bry...
Okay, okay. I think someone is just fishing for a remark from this long-time, non-frat-brat, non jock-off, fan of DMB and Coldplay. Or, someone is checking to see if said LTF is watching his blog but I must now comment. I do agree that since switching producers on Crash and again on Everyday DMB has definitely become dilute and repetitive. I still enjoy Dave (I actually preferred his "solo" effort of last year) as he reached a little. DMB has become a 'safe' choice and has definitely spawned some spin-off clones a la John Mayer (though Jonny can sure spin some good Hendrix live!) His albums have reversed the maxim of having a great album with one or two grating tracks to having one or two half-hearted attempts at re-capturing an early-career originality. Note that they were once a band of 6 and they are shrinking. So's the spirit.
Now for Coldplay. I'm not going to disparage Radiohead but this is a band that I've never been able to sink my teeth into. With a goof of a best friend, a room-mate, room-mate's psycho girlfriend and many more friends and 'critics' trying fruitlessly to shove the 'wow' and brilliance of Radiohead down my throat I just could't do it. Believe me I try more than many to latch onto a band's litany (reference my NIN collection-not many a listener's choice but what have you) but come on! Kraftwerk had some more fluid musicality! Sorry, I wasn't supposed to dog Radiohead. Anyway, I can appreciate what Radiohead has contributed. I don't see Coldplay as Radiohead without teeth. Just the new incarnation of Brit Pop. Long live Blur! and Elastica. We're dealing with two roads in post Brit Popdom. Experimentation and sub-triphop mellowness. Radiohead took the experimentation route like Portishead and managed it a little longer and with more mass appeal. Coldplay has taken the safer route, granted, and this may lead to greater longevity and, perhaps, the best of Coldplay is yet to come. Their impact isn't the critical big-bang that a band like Radiohead or like in the early House days of Stone Roses but then the Beatles started out with Penny Lane folks! It's all a journey. If getting pissed at Coldplay is the worst you've got to worry on Pal o' mine you've got it easy! Your air conditioning must be fixed.
Love ya,B
What actually sparked my whole Coldplay rant was the fact that every time I turn on MTV/VH1 they are having some sort of special expounding the musical brilliance of Coldplay and I just don't see it. Like Bry says, they are POP! There is nothing wrong with pop, I like pop, but when it comes at the expense of so many other groups who are more deserving of the praise, that annoys me. The media is looking for someone to latch onto... they want to make another U2 whether one is there or not. Now U2 is a completely different matter... I think they are deserving of all of the praise they get, and the Zooropa debacle aside, I think their music is the benchmark for which pop music should be judged... but I digress...
As for DMB... well they are just a band that I never got into. I don't hate them... I just don't understand the fascination. For example... I don't mind Tool, but I understand why people REALLY like them. Their songs are rich and layered, it's just not my bag, baby. And it's not like I haven't tried to like DMB. I have I think 5 or 6 of their albums, but it just didn't work for me. I tried really hard to like the Tragically Hip as well and realized I just don' t like them either.
I knew as soon as I posted my rant that Bry would have something to say and I am glad that he did. I never intended this blog to be a place where I could just type whatever I wanted without repercussions, I enjoy the dialogue.
And in conclusion... Bry... you're the worstest of the worse :)
